Hi

Wasn't too sure where to post this, but...

Basically my GF is Brazilian and wants to be able to call home and talk to her mum. Currently this costs 4p per minute, so over time adds up.

I am thinking about getting some kind of VoIP phone.

Am I right in thinking it would plug directly into the router (one here and one in Brazil) and then it would operate like a normal phone, but utilising VoIP instead of PSTN for calling, therefore making calls free?
Does anyone have one?
is it any good?
Any advice for models?

Thanks

Yeah but my GF's mum is the biggest technophobe ever, and my GF isn't particularly technically savvy (But miles better than her mother) and when you add in the fact the GF's mother will need my GF to tell her what to do in Portuguese (which will be a translation of what I tell her to do in English), it's all gonna be a big mess.

I was kind of hoping I could just find something to interface with the router and display Skype contacts internally?

Skype will be a lot easier to setup than VoIP.

Check out sipgate too, once signed up, you can get a x-lite software download all pre-setup. They also sell VoIP phones.

I think Skype will be best option for your situation. All they have to do is download, install, login (you can setup accounts for them, and add each other). Then get a headset or USB phone.

i used internetcalls for a long time. all you do is register put credit on then ring the person on your pc it will ring your house phone first. once you pick up it rings the other person and there is no internet lagg either its great

also you dont need a soundcard or mic with this so its free to setup (apart from buying credit)

Yes but at the moment the GF gets all hot under the collar because she has to faff around with the volume and can't hear anything, yadda yadda... Do you think a USB headset/ handset will work better than a line in/ out one? (Less faffing?)

Thanks

Its for her to call her mum and vice- versa. She lives in England and I don't wan to pay a massive phone bill :D
