Hi all,

I have a nice chap who is decided to start spamming my ventrilo server. We ban him yet he comes back. It seems he is changing his IP address.

The IP range he seems to be on is: 81.154.129.0/24

Doing a search it seems that this range belongs to BT and is in Bolton. I'm not bothered about finding who, just banning him permanently.

I've added the range to Ventrilo which seems fine so far, but worried about any other BT Users from around UK who might want to get in but are banned.

My questions:

1) Is it possible to reset your IP on BT quickly? I thought most ISP's these days were "dynamic" but barely refreshed your IP from their pool unless you've been offline for quite some time.

2) The range above I have banned, is that likely to isolate him to his area and exchange? I would have thought BT would own a larger range in all fairness. My knowledge of ISP IP Range distribution is fairly low though.

Is anyone on BT as an ISP who would be willing to test connecting to my ventrilo to see if you can get in? If so message my trust email!

Thanks

All he needs to do is disconnect and reconnect to get a new IP.

The range won't be associated with one particular area. You may find other people in different parts of the country are unable to join due to the block in place.

Is it feasible to password the server?

Thanks for the advice there fluff. I didn't realise BT give a new IP each time you reconnect. I thought that most ISP's were "Dynamic IP distribution" but in actual fact they try and reissue the same one unless it's in use.

That's how it seems to work for me, but I'm on VM so completely different.

I don't really want to password the server as it's been around so long without any seeing any problems and I don't have the contact details of everyone who uses it with my permission.

I have checked my logs and his IP does renew but always on the same 81.154.129.0/24 subnet it seems. I have banned it and checked with another user who is on BT who can connect fine. He is on a completely different range.

I'll just keep the ban on for the time being and if anyone has a problem connecting work out a way of allowing them in :)

Well currently the solution I have implemented has worked :)

He hasn't been on in over 24hrs and he was on 5+ times a day up until I added the ban. I might remove it in the future when he has got bored.

My vent has always been free to use as long as people are courteous to others and have been invited/asked permission. It's been like that for at least 5-6 years and I intend to keep it that way.

Having spammers is a possibility but that is the risk I take. If it gets worse then I might consider using a password.
