Hi,

I'm studying for an exam on Friday, and got this question off an old paper:

The IP protocol layer is responsible for the routing of data packets to
the final destination. How does an IP packet know where to go in order
to find a route to the destination? [5 Marks]

What would be the ideal answer to this?

Would saying that the IP packet knows where to go because an IP packet header contains a Destination IP address be sufficient? Or is it likely that im supposed to explain how it gets from the source address to the destination address?

In which case would, the IP packet gets sent to the NICs gateway, which checks its routing tables to decide the best route for the packet to get from A to B. Does that sound correct?

Thanks,
Jack

The question is pretty badly worded but for 5 marks id suggest needing quite a detailed answer. For the best answer to this however i'd suggest checking what the exam covers.. for instance its silly going into routing protocols like RIP/OSPF if its not covered by the curriculum
