IP throughput much lower than sync speed on ADSL2+

Connected through O2's stock Thomson 585 router, I can't get download speeds any higher than 4mbit, despite a sync close to 20mbit on the O2 Premium package. My machine is plugged into the router via cat5 ethernet cable. I've tried several different sites with the same results. Upload throughput is fine (~1.1mbit). No connection drops and I'm connected to the master socket.

Just out of interest do you have a different PC / Laptop at hand to run the same download tests from?

What do you get on a speedtest instead of a HTTP download www.speedtest.net ?

Have you ever acheived more than 4M (Ie has this only recently started?)

you're not sharing the connection with anyone? wireless secure (or off if you're not using it?)

very odd to see speeds like that on LLU. i just tested mine and and maxed it out- i sync at 20,600.

For starters use something other speedtest.net its total sh*te, inconsistent and unreliable.

This should be a better and far more reliable http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/

There is no IP profile on LLU you can get what you sync at almost immediately (or near enough depending on network usegae.

You don't need to test with another pc just boot safe mode with networking

Is it like this very early in the morning or past midnight?

Run a trace route to www.google.co.uk save it

Reset the router and it will set itself backup

May be a network/bras issue, congested backhaul (the bottom had to drop out of it sometime!!) - call thier tech support (BE) first line are not too bad but try the above first, if they cannot answer your query ask for 2nd line or network team.

My partner has 02 connection, sync's around the 20mb mark and get a max of 10mb in busy times. I work for an isp (not 02 or BE btw) and i can understand a little congestion at busy times.

Have seen plenty of weird and wonderful things that can cause windows based networking issues, registered deep enough to still be available in safe mode + net, was definatley worth a look if he had a box available.

Though it does seem to be a weird one, what are the chances of a congested backhaul causing the same DL ceiling since installation? :P

First thing I did was switch off the wireless AP as there's no need for it in a flat this size, not that I like wireless stuff anyway :p

I posted at the same time as encountering the problem. Not at home tonight, I'll try those in the morning and report back tomorrow. If that doesn't work I'll call O2's tech support I guess...

The LAN connection isn't the problem, because the response time to access the router setup is near enough instant. As for congestion, well the area is formerly Telewest Broadband (now VM cable) and to my knowledge hardly anyone uses BT-based connections around here.
