Hi guys

I need your help :confused::confused:

I have just finished off a new build as below:-

(all at stock for the moment)
Abit IP35-Pro (latest Bios)
Q6600 (Tuniq Tower)
4 x 1GB Geil ULL @2.1v
Sammy Spinpoint 500GB HDD
Coolermaster 450w PSU (which I had as a spare, its brand new)
Nvidia 8400GS GFX card (just to get the thing working)
pioneer DVD-RW SATA
Samsung DVD-ROM SATA

Now for the problem, I installed a copy of XP-Pro32 onto the said build it seemed to go on without any problems I then installed the motherboard drivers and MS updates all seemed fine then I noticed I was getting a lot of errors "performed an Illegal operation" even if I just clicked on Explorer or the Abit Guru tool for example (.exe)
So with much frustration I went and got myself a copy of Vista64, Formatted the drive and began to install it, went on no probs but I seem to have the same problem I did with XP for example it takes 30 secs to open any document including "my computer" and network connections and I can't even install the drivers off the MB Disc now (Not Responding) I have checked the RAM by installing a stick at a time and rotating it to different slots but I'm out of idea's now can anyone help... :(

My first thoughts on the application errors would be memory issues. I see you've had a play around with the memory but I'd try running MemTest to see if you get any errors.

I was having similar issues with my Asus P5E, even when trying one of my 4x1GB sticks of Corsair PC2-6400 at a time with everything at 100% stock settings. MemTest started giving me errors right away and after lots of fiddling around and a bit of reading I found out that Asus broke compatibility with my RAM (amongst others using Micron D9E chips) with more recent BIOS revisions - the original BIOS worked fine.

Edit: One other thought - do you have AHCI enabled in your BIOS? If so, download and install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager as this will update drivers for the AHCI controller. That was another issue I had with Vista - the PC would tend to generally be unresponsive while installing apps and it'd take an age until I either reverted the SATA to IDE mode or installed the Matrix Storage Manager which also installs decent AHCI drivers - the Vista built-in ones are knackered, or at least on my motherboard they are.

Thanks for the info Phemo AHCI is disabled I think its using IDE as standard
I have just been thinking I changed the voltage on the RAM to 2.1v but I ain't changed the timings from default will this cause a problem with GeiL ULL?
 
If left to auto it can sometimes detect incorrect settings, though usually the settings it detects are stable, just not running optimally. It might be a good idea to manually set it to what Geil recommend. MemTest would show up any errors though.
