(sorry to post in two sub-forums I dont know which would get more response)

Im having several problems with the board, to start heres the spec

Q6600 @ stock (Core temp average 34C on idle, so HSF is fine)
Arctic freeer pro 7 (with the cpu header plugged in)
Ip35 Dark Raider (problem?)
2Gb Geil Ultra low (upped the voltage to the 2.1 due to the spd not reporting properly)
8800gt Leadtek with zalman, with the pci-e power in
620 Hx Corsair (with the 24pin, the 4 pin molex and the other 6 pin all plugged in)
500gb Samsung Spin point (got a 500gb aaks installed but no power until I get everything working)
Soundblaster Ausidy 4

XP sp2 and all updates possible

Now the issues:

It doesn't recognise any of the contents of a usb pen drive thing, no idea why as other PCs do, see below.
It double boots from cold, maybe a BOS problem?
I can only put the SATA emulation thing to IDE in BIOS, any other setting it doesn't boot even though Ive installed the chipset drivers and dont understand how to get to work as SATA ACHP or whatever.

Further development:

When accessing large files of the usb drive, i.e. Sound blaster drivers, its crashes and then fails to recognize the contents of the drive.
Then it requires uninstalling then reinstalling (of the usb drive) for it to work again.

Any ideas?

Help would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance, Sukh

That's normal especially if you mean from all power removed from mobo incl. standby.
What BIOS version is on it?

did you install Windows with the SATA mode set to AHCI using F6 to install drivers?

other than this does USB work?
There is a known Windows XP issue (MS had a knowledge base article) where all USB can stop working on installation of Intel chipset drivers.

Yes I installed it with sata mode set to IDE to avoid F6, on the assumption I could change back, is this incorrect?
If I boot up as normal, I had the SB drivers on it and install straight from the usb drive without copying across to the desktop, it gives an error after a few seconds of installation, and from then on, even after reboot, refuses to see any contents of the usb drive (4gb sandisk job)

Thanks for help :)

I believe that it's possible to do but involves a bit of work.
Far easier just to install in AHCI mode to start with either using F6 & a floppy or slipstreamed drivers onto an install disc.

apart from the USB pen drive (which ports are you using btw?) does USB appear to work OK?

Ok heres the real crux, I had a Gigabyte Ds4 previously, and they made it easy to create the floppy for F6 drivers, abit are making it as hard as possible.

I just want to create the floppy, I use the abit CD utility as boot from CD and it doesn't work. I tried doing it from the Intel website I got the storage manager thing, but this PC "doesn't meet the specifications" so Im stuck in the middle.

The USB ports work fine, I can copy things across from the usb drive, just when I try to access files directly from it, It freezes and then I have to install it. I built another system yesterday with similar components, but with a Gigabyte board so im pretty sure it is a motherboard issue. The abit chip set drives are a bit rubbish because they don't make it clear they are installed, and although in device manager it says everything is fine, something is obviously awry.

Im using keyboard, mouse, usb drive, and these are all the ones on the i/o motherboard

Thanks for helping :)
(Also, can I just use the floppy I made for Gigabyte, or are they Chipset/Manufacturer specific? as it was p65 and this is p35, could I use the gigabyte p35 AHCI drivers?)

e.g. http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2743
for these:
Intel ICH9R Driver (Preinstall driver, press F6 during Windows* setup to read from floppy)

can you expound on this further - what exactly are you doing & what is happening?

they aren't abit chipset drivers they are Intel chipset drivers (or MS in the case of USB 2.0) ...

they are probably the same.
965 uses ICH8/ICH8R & P35 ICH9/ICH9R but iirc it's an all-in-one driver pack from Intel.

OK the first of all, im very greatful for your help and if there was a thanks button I would be pressing it :)

OK, so I put the Abit CD in, put CD as first in boot order, get the menu, Select 1 (Create boot floppy for the drivers) The floppy is in, select option 1 again, and it just gives me an error and im forced to reset, I can take a picture if it helps.

I meant the Abit utility for installing the chipset drivers, but I take your point :)

Im going to try the Gigabyte way and see how it goes I guess

O dear, after making a floppy A MS DOS bootable disk, theres not enough space to put the BIN file from the BIOS, am I being dense?

Ignore, my google (lack of) skills found out about DrDoss

Morning update, was up till 2 faffing about, I flashed the BIOS to version 16 from 7 or something and it has cured the double cold reboot problem and restart issues. I installed the AHCI drivers with F6, with floppy made from the gigabyte website, but forgot to change the mode in BIOS before so achieved nothing , but I'm not installing XP again..... Doing all the windows updates, and accidentally clicked update office so its gettin sp1 (194mb) so have to wait for that *sigh*

The USB issue is still there, are there any BIOS related settings it could be? There is an option about USB Legacy storage or something? I've enabled it, but it hasn't helped, any ideas?

I have checked that its not that particular USB drive, and used others and the problem still occurs.

Thanks in advance, Sukh

Last update I guess, turns out the USB drive I was using had fallen prey to an unknown fault, double rechecked with another drive (which happens to be a hard disk) and no fualt found.
Thanks Sandisk for making such a great drive which I know have to RMA
