iPad 1 Won't Update

Hi all

My iPad is currently running iOS 4.3x. When I try to update to iOS 5 I keep getting an error with "the device cannot be found". it basically backs up the iPad and then partway through syncing the home screen on the iPad switches to a black screen with white apple logo, i.e. as if I was turning the device on and then the error message pops up.

Apple's site suggests this should happen only when trying to update when there is not a newer version of the software when patently this isn't the case.

Any ideas - I'm using a brand new MBA with Lion if that helps and iTunes etc is up to date.

You could try doing a manual backup, then restore the ipad back to factory settings. After that try the update.

Have you tried doing a manual update? As in downloading the firmware off the internet and then option clicking update and selecting that file? Rather than letting iTunes do it all automatically?

Trying the manual backup just makes it crash during the sync now and it just seems to switch itself off and on again.

I will try the manual update but it's automatically syncing and crashing so it's like a cycle!

Might be worth forcing it in to DFU mode.

Cheers, seems to have restored now. Hopefully it will update properly.
