Hi Folks,
My in laws have an iPad 7th Gen from 2019. Light use. Carefully looked after, etc.
This week my MiL called to say she couldn't get it to turn on, and she thought it was a dodgy charger.
What this turned out to be was, the iPad was in a weird boot loop (where the apple logo would come up, and after 4-5 seconds would disappear and then eventually come back).
I did the 'hold power and home for 30 seconds' trick, and eventually after 5-6 attempts that came up with the image saying to plug it into a PC for restore.
I plugged it into my MacBook Air (2022 Apple Silicon blah blah running Ventura if that matters), and the iPad was detected in finder. It said I need to update the software or try a restore. I tried both, and both failed very quickly (under a minute) with the same error:
Looking online, everyone seems to suggest this is a hardware fault - and a wide range of what needs to be done, including desoldering the chip !
Apparently, Apple won't fix this.
Does anyone have any first hand experience? it sounds like it might be worth half a shop with a reputable local tech (we have western computers as an official reseller, I thought I could try there).
Equally, if it becomes a several hundred £ incident, I'm assuming just take a deep breath and buy a new one is the best option.
