My 3rd Gen retina display iPad is getting long in the tooth, want to upgrade now to one of these 2, screen size aside, on pure hardware side, what is quicker? (Ps don't care about the camera, hardly used it)

Air 2 is more powerful than the Mini 2. That said there is the Mini 4 which is out tomorrow, I think. Which is "meant" to have similar (not better) power than the Air 2. If true then really its down to screen size preference.

I have a 3rd gen retina like you and I'm currently trying to decide if I want to buy an Air 2 or Mini 4. I want to see the Mini 4 in action first as I personally prefer the size of the Mini compared to the Air 2. But I was a bit dissapointed with the Mini 4 specs if I'm honest.

334 days?! Hmmmm might wait until the next keynote and see what happens then.

As my (original) mini has started slowing to a crawl in the last 6 months I would not be recommending buying the Mini 2 right now, it won't be long before that crawls either.
 
The iPhone 6 1 gig ram 1853 memory score also beats the mini 4's 2 gig ram with a lower score of 1758. Less ram higher score ???(assuming the mini 4 has 2 gigs which is confirmed? )
 
Get the Air 2. I have an Air and love it to death.

I don't see the point of the Mini any more. When it was first introduced it was significantly thinner and lighter than the iPad and this was very attractive. Then they introduced the Air which was hardly any thicker or heavier than the Mini. I appreciate the Mini 4 is even lighter and thinner but, unless you really need it to be smaller or more portable, the Air 2 is the perfect size.
 
I would go with the air 2 or wait until October and see if a new version will be released.. The air will also allow split screen which is a nice feature.. Was considering upgrading to the air 3 but waiting now to see if it's released later this year, if not the air 2 will be top of my list
