iPad App question

I’ve had an iPad Pro 12” now for quite a while and use it daily as a pseudo laptop attached to its magic keyboard … generally very happy with it.

One thing that does puzzle me is that many apps I install end up being forced into portrait mode only and shrink to resemble an iPhone app…. Is there an option somewhere to automatically scale apps to the actual size of the screen and match the screen orientation?

Those are apps where the developer hasn't created an iPad version, so the iPad opens the iPhone version.

Thabks. Makes sense though for instance the national lottery app claims to have an iPad app on the app store yet it's forced into portrait mode as soon as you open it?

Do you have orientation lock enabled?

Like I said I use my ipad pretty much permanently attached to its magic keyboard so its in landscape mode yet sometimes I’ll open apps which whilst seemingly have iPad apps developed only only seem to work in portrait mode. yes I could obviously detach the ipad and hold it in portrait mode but … well it is 2022 and all that!

Perhaps the apps you're having an issue with only support Portrait Mode.

The National Lottery is a portrait only mode app indeed. And even if you are holding it in portrait but upside down (as my nan used to because she prefers the lightning cable to be at the top out of the way) then the app will start upside down. It's really bad coding from National Lottery.
