Is the ipad a viable option as a laptop replacement? All we use our laptop for is surfing the web in the living room. It's just a bit of a pain having to open and wait for it to boot everytime we want to use it.

It would do fine as a replacement for you. If you are just surfing the web you will find the iPad a breeze to use.

I would still keep your laptop though as very occasionally you will find a website just doesn't want to work for some reason.

Sleep mode is fine for a laptop, but even with that it will still take a while to come back to life whereas the iPad is instant on.

It depends how much the lack of Flash is likely to annoy you as well. People can argue the case for and against Flash, but, right now, it's still noticably absent when you're browsing on iOS devices. It doesn't really bother me so much but for others it would.

If the wait is all you're bothered about then try just putting it to sleep. Most of the time mine is ready to go in 4-5 seconds inclusive of putting in a password. The thing I find more annoying with my laptop is that it's flat or nearly flat half the time I come to use it, whereas the iPad standby time (and battery life in general) is just amazing.

On the flip side, for general sofa surfing I sometimes prefer a laptop. Having the screen at a completely different angle from the trackpad (i.e. input) works better when flaked out half watching TV. Perhaps have both for a while and see what works for you.

Sofa surfing, iplayer, magazines, news. It's all done on the iPad.

Although i still use a laptop quite pictures a lot. Copying photos from my camera, downloading music and video. Updating and syncing the iPad. Plus any sites that require flash. Plus if I want to type anything longer than a basic reply I'll switch to the laptop.
