iPad data recovery help

While updating our iPad it got stuck with an error and I had to restore it. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate that all the pics hadn't been copied to the backup I made just before updating and now I've lost about 3 years of pics and my wife is seething.

I'm desperately hoping there's a simple way I can recover the pics. Any help and/or advice greatly appreciated.

The devices are encrypted so no, no chance of recovery.

Turns out I hadn't borked it after all. The pics weren't showing up in the usage but were there when I looked on the iPad. TFFT!

Surely you backup the pics to the cloud?

A backup with iCloud Photo Library turned off results in photos being put in the backup file - not accessible separately - thus no "photos" on the backup usage
