iPad - does resetting via itunes force IOS update?

My iPad 2 has really started playing up for some reason.
Apps keep crashing and generally becoming unresponsive.

I have tried a local wipe and reset and the issues remain. Some sites have suggested connecting via iTunes and do a full update that way as this downloads the IOS software again I believe?

Thing is I do NOT want IO6 on the iPad. If I do the reset will it allow me to only reinstall the current 5.1.1 again?

Assuming you're using a Mac? Go here:

The links are to Apple's server. Download the firmware version for your iPad model.

Then in iTunes hold the alt/option key "⌥" and click "Restore iPad" a finder Window will appear navigate to the downloaded file and off you go.

If you're a Windows user the process is almost the same but the key is probably "CTRL".

I use the Google Maps, and especially the Streetview part a lot on my iPad.
