iPad Mini and Printing

Evening all,

I've got a friend who has 2 iPad Mini's in the house and he want's to be able to wirelessly print to them, I've not got an iPad anymore or any real Apple device so not sure on the settings etc....

He's thinking of getting a HP Envy 110 printer (with Airport enabled).

Am I right in thinking he would just need to set the printer all up, it acts as it's own wireless hotspot and the iPad Mini's have everything built in to just connect somehow and wirelessly print anything they are doing?

Is it a little bit more complicated than that?

He's going to pop the laptop somewhere in the house and use it just for Apple mobile device printing (his kids use loads of apps and it will get used loads if it does as we expect).

Am I missing something or is it that easy and we should go ahead and get one?

any airprint printer once set up will let you print from an iPad without any other fuss.

We've got two at work that, when bought, didn't have any airprint capability but HP have added it in after the event, and without any setup at all (they're just on the network by ethernet) all the iPads and Macs in the building can see them - this is even demo ones that have had no setup at all. Because it's airprint, the Mac/iPad can just go straight ahead and print to them as long as they're on the same network.

It's a splendid system but does lead to the odd picture of a spotty teenager falling out of our printer in the office without warning (it's a retail shop full of Macs and iPads).

Interesting, that's good to know that the whole Apple system is decent and easy to setup.

I wonder specifically about the printer as I don't think it has an ethernet port but does advertise itself as being wireless.

Would that mean it would connect to the guys wireless in his house and then any Apple devices on that same wireless network would be able to print to the printer - or does it mean that the printer itself creates a wireless hotspot so any device can wirelessly connect to the printer and print?

It doesn't need to be ethernet, it just so happens that ours are. With the wireless ones they'll presumably just need their software running, or to be set up through a Mac, although they might work straight out of the box. On all the ones that I've used, as soon as they're up and working, airprint is on.

The ad-hoc thing I'm not 100% sure about but I'm positive that I looked into it for a customer at one point and we came to the conclusion that it had to be on a wireless network and couldn't create one, but that might have changed, or maybe some can do it.
