My father in law has just returned from a cruise in the Far East. While he was away he bought an ipad mini and used this to take a lot of photos and video.
He did not setup iCloud as the ships wifi was broken and not fixable.

Anyway, he connected it to his MBP yesterday (first time since purchase) and iTunes popped up saying an IOS update was available so he proceeded with it.
On rebooting the ipad mini he found all the pictures and video had disappeared and the photo folder size showed as empty.

He went to the nearest Apple store yesterday but they asked him to return on Monday when a senior technician is available.

Is this all lost or is there any hope he can retrieve his pictures?

Unfortunatly, due to it being flash memory it is extremely hard to recover. First but of advice don't even turn the iPad on as it Even when on but not in use, flash memory can do its own housekeeping which can destroy deleted data. Next bit of advice google around to see if you can find a specialist data recovered.
