iPad Mini...

The iPad is 4:3 not 16:9 (held horizontally) ;)

An iPad mini would be perfect for me. £400 is too much to justify for a catagory of device that isn't really needed. But £200 is definitely in that "might as well have one" range. I'll wait to see what price it is though and how it compares to Surface (Windows RT) and Nexus 7 before I get a tablet though.

I'm very tempted to sell my iPad 2 and grab one of these. 99% of my iPad use is reading in some form or another and the smaller size seems ideal.

I wonder if they'll go down the 16:9 route like they have with the iPod/iPhone. So that the resolution ends up being 1366x768 so that the apps won't be scaled but will have black bars until they are updated. That way the 1366x768 resolution also beats the 1280x720 of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD (or comes close if they are 1280x800 I can't remember which. :D)

If Apple do release an iPad mini it will be popular. 7" tablets are a strong market, and frankly the current iPad is too heavy and large for comfortable one handed use.

If they target the Nexus 7 that would be great. But...the only problem is that the Nexus 7 is such a strong offering for the price. Don't know what Apple will do there, the iPad hasn't seen such a strong competitor before.

Last time I checked the Nexus 7 hadn't made much of a dent, its the Kindle that has taken most of the 7" sales.

Even the Surface RT comes with Office RT, USB/HDMI/microSD etc. so it's a step above the normal iPad - let alone a Mini. If you don't need all that then you might as well save money/size/weight/battery life etc. by going with the Mini.

I just think its a bit of a stretch to compare the two.

The surface RT is designed to compete directly with the current iPad, not the mini though although MS may release a smaller version at a later date depending on the stratergy behind the surfaces.

It says on the register that the iPad mini is wifi only. No 3G or 4G

If that's true, I wont be getting one. Tethering is a pain in the arse.

Wrong way around. The best thing about an iPad mini for me would be the mobility. I'd take it everywhere whereas I rarely would take my iPad out of the house, so wifi is fine, I don't have a cellular iPad, but an iPad mini? what's the point then?

I been using a nexus 7 from work for the last week, and I do prefer the size of them compared to the full size pads. I will certainly be tempted to get an ipad mini if/when it comes out like wise if they ever make a smaller iphone.

I just find the full size versions too big to carry around, hopefully the specs will match up to its rivals but like all apple products its not just the hardware but the compete package.

If it is lame, then I would just get a nexus 7 after the price has been dropped due to the ipad 7", its just that the apps aren't as polish as the ones on apple devices, but I do have VERY limited experience in the android market place.

I believe Metro can scale down to the 7" range, which would actually be quite awesome because with video-out and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse you would literally have a pocket PC.

What i would like to see is a wide screen ipad

That's the last thing I want personally.

IMO, one of the greatest assets of the iPad next to Android tablets is the 4:3 screen, as it makes it so much more usable in portrait mode. Granted, widescreen is better if you use it for watching widescreen video a lot but, when used in portrait mode, which is how I use my iPad most of the time, a 16:9 (or 9:16 of course) is just too damned narrow!

Until you see pieces of it appear on websites it ain't gonna happen*

With the amount of leaks surrounding the iP5 you'll be damn sure that if there was an iPad mini on the way people would be leaking it all over the show!

*it might happen

I find a 7" screen useless. It's the in between that just doesn't work for me.

I am exactly the opposite. I find a 7" tablet with 3g is the perfect travel companion. Slides nicely into any bag / satchel and I hardly know its there, just big enough to watch movies on etc. Everyone is different though :)
