iPad not charging/detected on PC

Hey folks,

So my warranty ended by about a 8 months ago and my iPad Air has died. I went to Apple who diagnosed it as a battery fail but won't replace it. I tried the consumer law bit but from what they told me the battery isn't covered. Only option is to pay £180 to replace or fix myself.

I initially thought it was just the battery but on realising it wasn't detected when i plug it into my PC it's mad me think the connector is faulty. If the iPad is off and i plug it in to the PC or wall socket it will boot up as if charging but will then not charge and will not be detected by the PC.

A tad confusing but i was wondering if anything has seen this before. I intend to crack it open and troubleshoot myself but figured someone might point me in the right direction to reduce the likelihood of me bricking it even more.

Cheers!
Ben

I tried charging my missus' iPad from the PC USB a few weeks ago after her power adaptor failed. It took about an hour to get a 3% increase in battery level. A bit of Googling later it appears a PC USB connection does not output enough juice to charge an iPad and you need to use a proper charger. So you might want to try a new charger before prising the thing open and/or going down the road of replacing the battery.

The reason they won't change the battery is they can't repair iPads due to the way they are constructed - even if it was just a battery all Apple would offer is the unit swap out. It makes ACplus more attractive on iPads compared to the phone for sure

Hey Guys, thanks for replies. Unfortunate it's not a just the PC connection that won't charge it. I've tried the official wall plug aswell / Confirmed that it charges my wife's iPad so it's deffo my pad that's the problem.

Alph, it is possible to change he battery but it's a bit of a faff I believe.

I'm just a bit frustrated that a £400 bit of kit fails after 2.5 years without me having any hand in its demise. I'm not paying £180 for a replacement purely on principle that the iPad should have lasted longer than that.

Any who I'll likely buy a battery and crack it open myself. Will update with results!

Silly question time,

Have you checked the lightning port for any fluff?

Common occurance with the phones, may be some crud up there with the iPad, have had a couple come back to me with fluff in the port.

Yeh I actually took it into Apple and they cleaned it out best they could. I've considered blasting it with compressed air to make sure. Apple also told me the battery is accepting 50% less charge than it should so I guess it could be an issue with the Lightning port

Nah always used official plugs and cables. Weird thing is it went from a period of sometimes not taking charge and then stopped taking at all which supports the Lightning port issue rather than battery.
