Wondered what people would recommend best option for a repair for an IPAD screen is please ? Its an IPAD 4 128gb version. Daughter dropped it - screen is smashed, but IPAD still works fine.

(1) Send off to Apple - circa £250 for replacement

(2) Take to store (is it then there and then ?) same price I guess - but if they don't have a 128gb IPAD 4 in stock would there be a sneaky chance of an upgrade - or would they send it off if no 128gb IPAD 4 refurb available ?

(3) get a 3rd party to repair it - any recommendations ? I guess unless Genuine apple parts its not worth doing - as one of the great things about the IPAD is the glass screen as in its very durable, doesn't scratch or attract too many fingerprints, I'm not convinced a 3rd party one would last as long. Anyone recommend a place that uses genuine Apple parts ?

(4) sell as broken and put money towards say a 64gb IPAD Air ? (we don't use all 128gb to be honest)

thanks

If you can wait a short while, get what you can for it now, put the money away and get the Air 2 when it's released. The strongly rumoured extra RAM will make a lot of difference.

Assuming that by "screen" you mean the digitizer, not the LCD inside, fix it yourself. £25 for a replacement digitizer, and about an hour of your time.

It can be a scary thought, it was for me, but once I did it the first time I was wondering what I was so worried about. I've now done it three times (just re-did mine this morning in fact).

Also there is no such thing as "genuine Apple parts" when it comes to digitizer replacements etc. as Apple simply do not make them available.

With regards to (2) of your questions... no, you won't be able to get a cheeky upgrade, Apple keep plenty of spares, even if the model is no longer on sale. From what I gather, its quite common for people to suddenly have problems or breakages right around when new models are being released in the hope that the replacement will be the new one. They don't operate like that though.

The only way you might get an 'upgrade' is if you make a claim on your home insurance, provided you have contents cover. My iPad2 screen shattered a couple of years ago and the excess to pay was cheaper than the £250 Apple want to replace it, so I went with that option.

After they determined my iPad was beyond economical repair, they couldn't source a replacement as the iPad2 was no longer sold, so instead they gave me the full value in Currys gift vouchers for the latest equivalent size model, which was a Retina model

Its worth pointing out that this wasn't around the time of any new models though, as apparently insurance companies are also quite wise to items suddenly having claims around new launches, as I believe there are serial offenders out there.

My insurance premium didn't change, but then its also the only claim I've made.

You won't get genuine Apple parts from anywhere other than Apple. That said you're really just paying for the name as many aftermarket parts are compatible and reliable. Check out Gadget Menders if you have not solved the issue yet. Pretty sure you can get the parts and tools form them for under $100 USD.

Correction about the you can't get genuine parts anywhere. You can get genuine parts you just can't get factory new genuine parts there all second hand from spare/repair sales.

I would get rid though and get the next model along if it's due relatively soon.

Yup these people are correct. Genuine parts are a non starter, Unless you know someone who works in the factory.

The 3rd party parts are actually not that bad, yes the glass is not as strong and other stuff but for a £20 part which is easy to replace its a compromise.
