iPad Syncing query

I need to update a family member's iPad using my PC to the latest iOS.

I already have an iPad and have this sync'd with my PC.

Can i backup their device to my itunes, update their iOS and then restore their backup to retain all their settings etc?

What iOS version is it running at the moment?

it was on 4.0.1

I managed it ok by creating a new library, plugging it in and transferring purchases and then syncing

Amusingly, the update could have been done on the iPad itself.

How? OTA updates weren't supported prior to iOS5.

D'oh! Apologies, convinced myself it came in on iOS 4.

Don't think there was any need to start a new library, you can have multiple iDevices synced to one iTunes.
