iPad to TV

I want to connect my ipad 2 to my TV with sound, so I'm guessing the only way to do this is with HDMI. Is there any alternative to apples HDMI adapter?

plenty of after market and ones and composite options but apple one works the best.

Is there any reason I should buy Apple TV over something like the WD Media Center? I guess the airplay mirroring could be fairly useful but in terms of streaming from a pc the WD has a 1080p where as the ATV only has 720p.

AirPlay is awesome!

iPhone, iPad, iTunes all stream wirelessly to the atv2.

Yeah I'll probably just going with the ATV2. I'm planning on having a small notebook running 24/7 with itunes and large hard drive. Should all be fine yeah?

Why a small notebook 24/7? Purely for streaming purposes? Surely it would be cheaper to go some sort of HTPC? Acer Revo perhaps?

HDMI cable + adapter is around £45 from Apple. The Apple TV is worth the extra £54.

Yes, it's exactly what I do. I have XBMC installed on ATV2 and stream HD movies over WiFi.

We've got a Belkin Wireless N1 Router in the house. Connected to it is:

My desktop (wired)
Two Laptops (wireless)
Xbox (wireless)
and a few other things like a phone and an ipad.

When i used to use an additional laptop on the network for Skype the router would often disconnect and would need restarting, then the same would happen again after an hour or so. Would streaming videos locally have any effect on the performance of the other devices accessing the internet or is it different because it's only local?
