I've just downloaded iperf in prepartion for some tests I plan to do to compare 802.11g to 802.11n for a project, and to get to grips with it I tried it on my wired connection between my PC to my Laptop via a switch and I don't quite understand the results.

On my laptop I'm using iperf -s and jperf as the client on my windows 7 machine. Now I havn't gone into the more complex tests yet as I'm not sure about the default tests it ran, because with default settings it shows 300Mb/s bandwidth on the tests, and when set to dual mode it shows 300Mb/s one way, 800Mb/s the other way. Can someone please explain to me why results when differ when an ethernet connection should have the same upload as download?

Also, could someone please explain what settings are best to use for testing the following as they will be what I need for when doing the tests for my project. First I need to test the throughput, and then I need to be able to test how 'stable' the connection is, both in terms of latency and variation of the connection (one of the iperf guides I read just refered to this as jitter) as this would be import testing for uses such as VOIP and other realtime applications.
