I have been playing with a Samsung A71 and thought it would be interesting to do a comparison of the cameras. They are straight out the camera with no processing, didn't think it would be so close to be honest although night mode on the iPhone is much better. All taken at the same time and lighting conditions, there is a link after each to the original. I am particularly impressed with the A71 ultra wide shots considering you can purchase 3x A71's to 1x iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Just thought it might interest someone looking for a more budget phone....

I favour the A71 in some of those photos. Under the bridge for example, the iphones high contrast hides some of the under pinnings.

First photo for me looks sharper and a bit more on the cool side (my preference). There are some where the iphone is better though.

Although I have an iPhone myself (iPhone 11), I've never thought the camera was anything above average. Not a patch on the pixels imho, despite reviews having them very close. I guess again it's personal preference. I like cooler, more contrasty shots rather than more true to life.....albeit in your examples it's the iphones contrast which takes some of the photos details away. Biggest complaint for me is that sometimes the iPhone softens the image too much.

You are right though, I don't think these days you can buy a phone with a really poor camera. Even the dirt cheap ones have a semi decent camera on. I think the expensive flasgships are now adding in extra lenses and the like to keep the gap.

My thoughts:

I think these days where most phones can take a decent outdoor snap, it's all about how they deal with low light. And, as the OP points out, the iPhone's night shot is considerably better. Vastly better, in fact.

Interesting. Especially as I can get an A71 for sub £300

A71 definitely puts up a good fight. May improve over time with firmware updates too.

Might be worth it.

[edit]

Just ordered one through an offer that the other half's work had. Down to £327 and then have the £60 cashback coming on top of that. Ordered the view case as well. Now to find a screen protector (preferably glass).

Already have a 400gb MicroSD ready to go into it.
