Hi,
I have the option of purchasing an iPhone 13 Pro or a Pixel 7 Pro. Both will be brand new and each will cost £500. I don't know which would be the right choice for me and so I would like your help in understanding this. A little about my wants is below.

1) I've been using a Motorola (near stock Android) for the past three years and it's been absolutely fine. It does all that I need. It's use is 5% texts/calls and the remaining 95% is the internet/streaming. I don't play games and neither do I do social media.
2) I have no intention of customising the phone. I trust the manufacturer's UX developers to design something good to use.
3) Recently, I did use an iPhone 11 Pro Max for a couple of weeks for internet/streaming use and I just didn't like the feel of it. This may well be due to my familiarity with Motorola near-stock Android.
4) I'm have larger hands and so I'd imagine the larger Pixel 7 Pro would be a better choice.
5) I know Android allow many third-party peripherals to work well with Android, however I hear Apple restricts full functionality with third-party peripherals, I assume to attempt one to fully buy into the Apple ecosystem. For example, Samsung buds can connect to and be configured by Android, iOS only allows connection but no configuration.
6) I do not want to be locked into a walled-garden (thinking Apple here). I'm happy to use a Windows laptop, Garmin watch and Bose earphones. I have no intention of switching over to Apple's ecosystem and being at the mercy of their pricing.
7) A bigger, sharper screen would make sense considering my usage.
8) The reason for this new purchase is the Motorola has a poor camera (or I should say poor camera software) so I would like this next phone to have a good camera.
9) Battery power is a plus. It would be nice if the phone could last a couple of days with moderate use.
10) I hear Google's keyboard is better than the iPhone's.
11) I hear Google Maps works seamlessly on Android but not so on iOS.
12) I understand Android has cold-call/scam vetting which is a plus.
13) I hear Apple is very good at privacy and security. I use banking Apps (downloaded from the Google Play Store only) and so I need to be confident my phone is locked down and protected.
14) Durability. I aim to look after this phone and keep it for five years. I also would like software updates. The iPhone 13 Pro is two years old now so may only get another four years worth of updates, maybe five years. The Pixel 7 Pro has at least Android updates for two more years, and security updates for four more years. Both seems fine on this.
15) I worry about Apple's morality. They've already been caught for intentionally slowing down their devices at the two year mark. What else are they doing that we're not aware of.
16) I hear that Google are an advertising company and so any/all data usage is reviewed/sold on - if true this puts me off (not that anyone would be interested in me). I hear Apple keep things private which would be a big plus for me.

As I'm used to Android and am happy with it, and considering I didn't like the feel of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, I'm thinking I should get the Pixel 7 Pro. However, there are just so many iPhones in use (it seems the wealthy/celebrities always use them) and so much iPhone hype about them it tells me I'm missing something if I don't get the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Could it be the case of the iPhone was the clear winner up till two years ago but now Pixel have overtaken them and it's just a case of Google's marketing team do their job better?
What would be your suggestion (pick)?
Thanks.

Sounds like you've already made your mind up.
I am learning towards the Pixel 7 Pro but I haven't made my mind up yet.
As I say, there seems to be so many iPhone users, they're all I see on TV/films and peers, that I don't understand what I'm missing for them to be so popular.
I'm hoping comments on here will help me understand or if it really is superb marketing by Apple. Even put me right if my assumptions above are incorrect.

The hardware in the Pixel is quite a bit worse and I don’t think they guarantee any significant period of software updates except for the new 8.

Depends on how you use it and how you might use it in the future but the iPhone is the better product.

Android updates until October 2025 and security updates until October 2027. Not as good as the 13 Pro as I think that's iOS updates until 2028.
That’s not too bad, but Android is a bit of a minefield for updates. Generally it seems Google or Samsung are your best bet.

The hardware would be more concerning though. I saw that the new chip in the Pixel 8 is still a bit rubbish compared to Snapdragon/Apple recent processors. I generally plan on keeping a phone for 5 years so it’s probably personal preference.

Google have never put the latest and greatest SOC in their handsets. If you're a user who isn't interested in gaming on their phone then I can't see it being an issue to be honest.

I think one of the biggest strengths of going Apple is the ecosystem. If you're not interested in later down the line adding an iPad, Apple Watch, Air Pods etc then it diminishes the iPhone proposition.

You'll see a lot of people on social media using iPhones because in the US it is the dominate phone due to iMessage lock in.

Totally depends if you're an apple or android person.

No contest for me, I haven't had an iPhone since the 5. Will never go back.

I love my pixel 6pro, so can only assume the 7pro is slightly better.

I have a 13 Pro that work supply and an S23 Ultra (personal) and utterly hate iOS and how it does things.
The menu system, navigation and file system just wind me up when on Android I feel like I can do things faster and easier without the need for 14 additional swipes to get to something.

Also utterly despise FaceID and the fact that I daily drive both and inscreen FPS and FaceID just keeps reminding me how terrible it is.

iOS to me is just so clunky and archaic. It's barely changed since the first iPhone. Android on the other hand has evolved into pretty much the perfect mobile OS for me.
