iPhone 2.0 firmware available now

Once again, digging through Apple's XML files has revealed the url to the iPhone 2.0 Firmware that is presently available on Apple's servers. The firmware image has a filename of:

iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (download link)

This build is slightly higher than the one of the latest iPhone Firmware Beta (5A345) which was also spotted on shipping iPhone 3Gs. Despite the filename appearing in the XML file, the actual firmware has not yet been released officially. As well, the firmware carries a "1,2" designation while all previous firmwares, including the beta firmwares carried a "1,1" number.

Apple has posted an updated guide about firmware upgrades and warns:
Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software. In this case, iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to. You should ensure that you have enough free space on your Mac or PC to accommodate a backup that matches the capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch (4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB) if you proceed with the this backup.

In order to install the firmware, you will have to do it manually by pressing the Option key when pressing the "Check for Update" button in iTunes. Then select the .ipsw file manually. If for some reason your download is a ".zip" file, rename it to ".ipsw" before proceeding.

We expect the firmware to be officially released shortly and will appear in your iTunes software update. If you don't wish to wait, you can use this method, but should proceed with caution. That being said, people have successfully used this firmware on the original iPhone, and are successfully downloading and running App Store apps.

Make sure your browser is not set to automatically open downloads, save it to your desktop, if the extension gets re-named to .ipsw.zip then remove the .zip so it's just .ipsw.

Open iTunes with your iPhone/iPod Touch plugged in, then click option click (Mac) or shift click (Windows) 'Update' or 'Restore' depending, then locate the software you downloaded.

I'll wait patiently for this to be safely unlocked. Well, not that patiently.

Now the AppStore is available, I don't care about Jailbreak anymore. Just need it unlocked to use my T-Mob sim on my iPhone (original)

My update appears to be failing, i'm doing everything as it has been described.

Could my issue be that i had previously jailbroken/unlocked my ipod?

Since then i have restored my ipod within itunes before attempting to perform this update. My current cycle is

Restore
Perform update -> Update failed Reason 5 (s)
Restore
Perform update -> Update failed Reason 5 (s) etc

As excited as I am at the prospect of the V2 firmware I think I'll wait for it to be unlocked properly before I chance it :(

Just need ziphone to be updated now lol :D

Some nice features in the 2.0 software, ability to create folders and such for email would be nice

iTunes remote is the killer app I think.
Just updated one of our iPhones to test (we have 3 in the house). Very impressed.

This may be dumb, but what does it do? I guess it alows you to control iTunes on a computer by remote, but what benefit does that bring?

Pick up iPhone, select a song and your PC plays it. You can see all your iTunes library on the phone.
It's great for me as I have an HTPC and it means I just need to flick the amp on and I'm good to go.

Question.....

If you buy an App say in itunes for the itouch, do i have to pay for it again for the iphone? Or does the app apply to my account and not the device?
