Iphone 2G - Wifi Data on but network data off?

Hi,

I am going to be giving my Iphone 2g to my dad. Now he is on Pay & Go on Orange so does not want to incur costs while walking around from the phone connecting to the mobile network and downloading data, emails for example etc. He does have wifi though where he lives so wants to connect to this and obviously make calls.

Now if I tell him to go and turn of data connections in settings will he still be able to use the phone and wifi?

If I am correct, he would have to enter his Orange Internet/WAP details into the iphone to gain access to the net.

Not quite sure how it works with using another sim other than an o2 one though..

Delete all the EDGE settings, that will stop it connecting.
