Iphone 3 to Iphone 4 question

sorry if this is a silly question

have got an iphone 4 today and need to copy across everything from my iphone 3 - am with O2 and new iphone is with o2 so shortly after leaving the shop the old phone started showing 'no service' presumably as iphone 3 sim is deactivate and the new iphone 4 one activated.

have just connected the iphone 3 to my laptop and started up itunes (haven't backed it up too often) and am given the following message

'An iphone has previously been synced with this computer
- set up as a new iphone
- restore from the backup of Dowie's Iphone'

Last synced 15/05/2010

Now I'm not 100% sure what the impact of selecting either of these options is - presumably 'restore from the backup of Dowie's iphone' would cause me to lose some data and my phone would be back to how it was in April? So I'm presuming the first option might be better....

Would 'set up as a new iphone' cause the iphone3 to store everything onto the computer so I could then 'restore from the back up of...' when I plug in the iphone 4?

Recommend reset and starting from scratch - just re-sync contacts only (separately).

Any reason for the recommendation? One thing Ive loved about my upgrade was that everything was restored back onto it with a few clicks. Pretty much sold on the iPhone because of that experience.

Do you do that when new FW is announced too?

I just set up as a new iPhone when I got my 4 last month. Had to select which music/movies to copy across but my contacts, email accounts and bookmarks were done automatically :)

Because you may bring over lots of previous errors or junk files that are not needed, and my slow your iPhone down slightly. By starting from scratch you avoid that for sure. Reinstalling apps is easy - but some may forget settings/data.

Either way is fine really - its just my preference.
