Iphone 3G - 3G, not so hot?

O2 3G in my area is very strong, getting full bars most of the time and the data rate is almost as fast as wifi. The signal does drop abit when I drive out of town tho.

I've had my phone since last Monday and 3G has pretty much been a let down. I live in the Middlesex area for crying out loud and I have yet to see more than 2 bars. During lunchtimes I normally go to a park nearby and tap out some texts and emails - browsing the net is pointless there.

I normally get a full 3G signal at work (even inside) so I can browse the web and stream podcasts on my break, however it disappeared completely today and I was only able to get a weak GSM signal when standing outside. I know for a fact that O2 have a GSM and UTMS tower about 200 meters away from where I work. When I left at 10pm I noticed all the street lights were out nearby, I'm hoping that is also what is causing my lack of signal because I am guessing the street lights and cell towers share power.

I have been trying to get my iPhone to use 3G since I got it on Saturday but it simply won't use it. I have checked coverage and it is good for my area, and a friends iPhone always uses 3G when I have been standing right next to him with mine. I just get the Edge logo and sometimes GPRS. 3G is enabled through the phone options and I have turned it off and back on a few times now and still nothing. The network list shows O2-UK 3G but when I try and manually connect to it, I get told the connection was lost. Is it possibe that I have a duff phone?

I had to take my iPhone back because of a faulty switch. I've noticed that with the new one if I put my hand at the bottom the number of bars drops. Move my hand and it goes up. Anyone else notice this?

After using the Ofcom Sitefinder I managed to track down the nearest base station to my workplace, it lies about 300 meters away. I managed to file a report agaist the site saying that I was having signal issues, I got a reponse today which said "We have had problems with power to this site, ... it will be restored soon." I'm glad that it's not the phone then.

I swear O2 has a really duff system.

When i was visiting my father in London we put our phones side by side, his was unlocked and mine was O2 official.

He would get Edge reception and i wouldnt. Wasnt happy!

I'm in Manchester and have had excellent 3G coverage in and around the city centre and also around my house. 5 Bars... Can't argue with that!

The only time I've seen it drop out to edge is when I'm travelling somewhere.

Hmm nothing here. I'm mostly on 2-3 bars in the office. I'm off to lunch now so I'll try and see if it has any effect outside properly.

I find in Didcot and on the train into Reading I get excellent 3G, however once I start getting close to Reading then the 3G performance drops off rapidly and this morning actually reported back that Server Connection lost. I am guessing that just getting too many 3G on O2 in the Cities for them to cope with the number and it lowers the performance.

I am finding that in the cities the connection is poor but out in the towns and villages by me the connection is really good. Much better then the Edge Connection I could never get on my iPhone Mk1.
