iPhone 3G backlight when charging - lit or not?

As title, should the backlight be lit when charging?

Mine is on the charge now and the backlight is off, but I am not certain if my last one did this.

Can anyone confirm if it should be on or off when charging using the standard charger?

The backlight should be off.

5 Originals and 2 3Gs

1. Original (the alarm never went of - later discovered it was a software issue on 1.1.2)
2. Speaker was very quiet and poor quality
3. Dead pixels
4. (CANT REMEMBER)
5. Speaker again
6. First 3G out the box it had a massive crack on it!
7. Current one - its sleep button and ringer switch are worn out.
