iPhone 3G (Error 1015 & 3194)

Hi all, I have an iPhone 3G here which was bought used and claimed to be unlocked. But when I went to update it via iTunes, after restoring the firmware it would bring up the Error 1015.

I'm guessing it was jailbroken before and thus software unlocked. I'm not bothered about the unlock for now as I just want to get the phone working.

I've tried recovery and DFU mode restores, downloaded the IPSW from an external source and tried recovering with that. Tinyumbrella, iReb and RecBoot don't help. Checked my hosts file and added the '74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com' at the end. I've gotten a bit further now and now I get the Error 1394.

I've read something about having to build a custom firmware to install on the iPhone, but I'm wondering where I get this from? Also I've read about this baseband business but I don't know what the baseband for my handset would be.

Any help would appreciated.

iPhone n00b.

Managed to restore it using the 3.1.3 firmware, which even after giving the 1015 error, I ran iReb to kick it out of that mode. Lo and behold, it started up with the insert SIM to activate screen!

Now trying to update from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1 but it gives the 3194 error again. Hmm...
