Hi - Has anyone else had this problem, or know anything about it?

My iPhone 3G has never used the proper GPS location functionality (i.e. the one where your your live position is shown as a blue orb). All it ever uses is what I assume is the rubbish WiFi/Cell-Tower triangulation that results in the massive blue 'crosshair' marker that's so coarse its pretty much useless.

It seems like the phone doesn't even try to use the proper GPS. Doesn't matter if I'm inside, outside, city or country, with WiFi on or off. Any ideas?

I think I somehow managed to turn it off in the actual map tool. Was using google to plan a route so didn't want to use gps. It asked whether I wanted to use location services or some such. Not been able to use it since.

Have you tried it outside for 5mins or so? I find it very good on mine. It locates me quickly inside the house, and I've used it to navigate cities before and it tracks my position perfectly.

Yup - tried all sorts and I've never seen the proper GPS tracking marker, just the wack-ass crosshair thing. If all else fails, hopefully a wipe for firmware 2.2 will kick it in to action.

That was right. Took the chance to completely wipe it when putting the new firmware on and the proper GPS now works.

So it looks the the phone can get in to a funk and take the decision to completely disable proper GPS without you having a say in it.

I think you have to have a "pin" in the map for it to become the blue orb, and not the blue xhair.
