I dropped my iPhone a couple of weeks back and have managed to break the vibrate function (might be the switch) and crack the back casing... Most of the time I use my iPhone on silent so this is a big issue for me.

To solve the problem, I went out and bought a new iPhone and am now using that one. The thing is my old one was bought from Italy, sim-free and legally unlocked. My new one is jailbroken and unlocked...

So my question is:

Is it worth me repairing my Italy one and using that, or just sticking to my UK new one?

Opinions please...

If you can, I'd get italian/legit-simfree one fixed.

I'm always worried that the next big update will render jailbreaks and unlocks useless. Of course it would depend on how much it would cost to get it fixed, and who did it.

The cost of getting the Italian one repaired is going to be around £150... give or take - and you have a good point!

Can't you just buy the bits and have a go it doing it yourself? If the back cover is cracked it doesn't matter if you break it taking it off...

I would do but the cost of getting parts + repair is only £10 more than cost of parts... so for piece of mind i'd rather get someone else to do it! :)

Back cover, switch and bezel (Bezel is cosmetic though, would bother me)... Back cover and switch is £120 cheapest I could find :(

Is the iphone really that good? that you bought another 1 and then your still willing to pay through the nose to get the other one fixed

For what I use it for, it's perfect... emails come in throughout the day... I'm on the web on it about 3 hours a day, listening to music on it all the time and recently it guided my around Rome on foot single handedly... I really couldn't do without it anymore! :p

DEANO-UK - I didn't realise you could back up an iPhone to an ipsw - any instructions/links?

And surely changing the serial number is illegal?

What I don't understand is why would the dev team go to all the trouble they go to, to unlock the iPhone if this is possible?

DEANO-UK - Can you post a screenshot of the about section of your iPhone please? Obviously blocking out serial number etc... i'm interested but want solid proof...

dudes a picture is not proof, i tell you what i dont understand i told you how to do it, its how mobile phones shops do it and charge £50 for its not hard to to do

i do it all the time, it seams to me your looking on mainstream iphone hack sites, however why would trade dealers of iphones release this 4 free, it aint going happen, the imformation is out there

concorde rules you bs strange, i tell you what post your iphone to me, i will do it then post it back then you post on this forum your a noob

so now im waiting for you

Total cop out - please can we get this thread back on track...

Still undecided on what to do... think i'm getting the italian one repaired!

But I don't want your software lol... and I don't want to unlock an iPhone

All I wanted was proof that unlocking was possible by serial... end of

you would bother with dev team, because your skills are such that you need other people to do the work for you.

however tell me how apple knows which phones are locked and which phones are simfree, you only connect to itunes so the phones sends its serial number if its locked u get ipsw locked, if its simfree you get ipsw with no baseband lock

so if you have a simfree iphone, you already have the ipsw with no baseband unlock, then you can put a locked iphone into dfu then install the ipsw then its done, but if you update in itunes oops its locked again, so somebody made a serial number changer, but u still need one simfree iphone 4 the serial number and to download the ipsw,

so as a trader it was worth be payin 800 quid for a simfree iphone, so i can unlock the iphones i sell, the dev team unlocks and jailbreaks and trys not to break any laws, but the serial changer is illegal so its not going be on mainstream sites, but hes a clue try russian sites

it seams to me, you think dev team is the only way to unlock the iphone, not true, its the easy way for iphone uses which dev likes to do, but if you think in the trade we use quickpwn, itunes, cydia, yellowsnow to unlock each phone your grazy,

but i tell you what if your no noob as you say, use winscp to enter your iphone using ssh then post the root where the imei number is stored on your iphone then post it its not hard to do, then i will take back by noob comment and say sorry, and email you serial number charger and 2.2.1 ipsw sim free

lets see..........

You still haven't posted proof :o
