plugged it into the pc and itunes said its in recovery mode and needs to be restored, tried the restore several times the apple logo appears gets to about 70% of the way across and stops dead.

tried the holding down home + sleep but does nothing really got a white screen once or twice.

phone was jailbroken on 4.2? ios from what i remember worked fine for ages

if anyone could help it would br great due to go on a staff dinner and a phone to sort taxis etc would be great!

Try this maybe?...

If you use windows, go to start->run-> %appdata%
Open "Apple Computer", Open "iTunes", check if there is a folder named "Device Support".
If the folder exists, delete any contents inside, if the folder does not exist create it. Make sure you empty the recycle bin.

If you use mac, go to "user name"\Library\iTunes\, check if there is a folder named "Device Support".
If the folder exists, delete any contents inside, if the folder does not exist create it. Make sure you empty the recycle bin.

Connect your iPhone to the computer and put your iPhone in DFU mode. Once you see it pop up in iTunes, hold shift or option (depending on your os) and click restore. Locate your custom firmware and repwn....

Have fun.

P.S. - You must have iTunes 7.7 to perform update.
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034 - how to put in DFU mode

EDIT - btw that quote is from 2008, so not sure if you HAVE to have 7.7, or any version after that works.

EDIT 2 -
iPhone Recovery mode:
Disconnect your iPhone and turn it off by holding the "Sleep/Wake" button for about five seconds and then sliding the red slider. If your iPhone is already off, there's no need to turn it on and then off again. Once it's off, press and hold the "Home" button and plug your iPhone into a Mac or PC with iTunes installed. Keep holding the "Home" button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon. iPhones running older software will display a yellow triangle and text which says "Please Connect to iTunes". Once you see this image, you can release the Home button. Open iTunes (if it's not already open) and you will be told that "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode." Click "OK" and you will be taken to the iPhone pane. Click "Restore" and you're done, it's that easy! Depending on the extent of your iPhone's ills, it may take some time to do a full restore. Once you're done, you should again have a perfectly working iPhone.

If this doesn't solve your problem, you may need to restore using DFU (Direct Firmware Upgrade) mode. To enter this mode, plug in your iPhone and turn it off. Hold down the "Home" and "Sleep/Wake" buttons for about twelve seconds. You'll briefly see the silver Apple logo and then your phone will appear to turn back off. Release the "Sleep/Wake" button but continue to hold the "Home" button until you see a message in iTunes stating that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Choose "Restore" and you should be fixed right up!

I've totally lost patience with my 8GB iPhone 3G, it seems ever since the iPhone 4 came out Apple have lost all interest in properly supporting this phone, evidenced by the massive performance problems that a lot of 3G users had when Apple released iOS 4. I've had nothing but problems and after recently upgrading to 4.2 the slowness has returned yet again. After Christmas I'm going to be getting rid of it and buying something else. I usually like Apple products but they've just taken the **** with this.

Aye my iPhone has slowed to a halt and the battery is shot. I don't know whether to stick out for the new iPhone in July (which usually comes out) or to get an iPhone4 next month. Decisions, decisions.

Yeah the battery life on my 3G is absolutely horrendous. I'm going to be swapping this for a Defy on PAYG, once the Motorola crap has been taken off it should be way better than what I've currently got. The specs suggest it's vastly better than my iPhone and at more than £100 cheaper than what I paid for my 3G it's a bargain imo.

Hi mate

Apple seam to have screwed people over who jail break and now if you restore you can get errors which is maybe why yours is refusing to restore?

Any how try this

Here Solution after upgrading OS on 4.1.2 IPhone Stuck On Apple Logo.

1. Open Itunes and pres shift and restore with original firmware 4.1 (no need custum firmware).

2. after some time you will get error 1015,But don't worry.

3. now close the Itunes and open (RecBoot) or tinyumbrella click on EXIT RECOVERY MODE. afer exit recovery mode your phone shows itunes .

NOTE: you must use modified HOST FILE otherwise you will se 3194 error.
This method you can apply at both 3GS and 3G.

Download RecBoot.zip from mediafire.com - Filestube.com - download everything

you can get from here (RecBoot)

If your problem will solve plz press Thanks button.

cheers guys for the input i had all but given up on the phone after trying several different tips on various sites and forums untill this morning the phone showed the low battery icon and that it needed charging before use.
so i gave it one last try on restore and it actually got to 100% and is now working again.
have no idea of the cause as it had been running in its jailbroke state and i had not made any changes or added / removed apps in several weeks.

on a self thread derailment is the 3gs much better than the 3g as i may be able to get a hardly used one for about £150
