Good morning everyone, I’m new to the Apple world of computing, I’m more of a Microsoft person but have to admit the quality and functionality of Apple products is stunning.

A few friends have IPhone 3G’s and one is Jail broken and the others are stock, I’m considering getting one on o2 PAYG but would want to use my pay monthly Orange sim card, how could I unlock it without JBing it?

My friends JB 3G is noticeably slower compared to my other friends stock when side by side, from applications to boot, that’s the reason for not wanting it JB’ed.

Thanks and Happy New Year

Currently there is no way of unlocking without jailbreaking. I'm surprised your friends is that much slower though, does he have a lot of 'background' type apps running (SBsettings / winterboard / homescreen etc)? My 3G jailbroken/unlocked is no noticably slower at all than my friends non-jailbroken 3G!

He doesn’t have anything running in the back ground, even after a reboot its much slower, we are talking about 5 second delays compared to stock.

Are the 3G’s unlocked stable, eg, I wont be out and about with the signal and 3G fluctuating?

Thanks

Stab in the dark but does your friend have winterboard installed? If he does and hasn't updated it in the last couple of months then that will be the problem. There was a bug in winterboard that caused general slowness which has since been fixed.

Everything will be the same as if it was stock, you wont/shouldnt notice any delays, or loss of signal etc.

Like mentioned above, when mine (JB'd) is no slower than a stock iPhone, only when I run custom themes (Winterboard) I notice a slight (very slight) delay in Booting, or swapping between apps, but we talking 0-1 second delay, which IMO is nothing, and you cant even notice it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I work on Regent street, I’m itching to get one on my lunch, the 16gb white. If I buy it and JB/unlock it, then decide I didn’t want it, can I restore it and take it back to o2 for a refund without them noticing?

My friend only just installed Whiteboard within the past week, so that should include the update?

Also, would a JB 1st gen touch be slower than a JB 3G iPhone…

What is the battery like, that was another negative as I’ve heard its very bad?

Thanks

You wouldnt wanna take it back, its one of the best things Ive ever experienced in life. Ha ha. Money well spent. But say you did, then you would just hit restore when connected to iTunes, and it will restore the phone to the original state, thus leaving no trace of a JB.

Yeah, it should be the latest version with updates etc.

Not 100% sure on this, but I would have thought they would be differences between them.

Depends how you use it, if I use mine a fair bit in the day, then it will be almost empty at the night time. Its safe to say that you would find your self charging it up every 1 to 2 days, but it don't take long, mine takes roughly over 1 hour to fully charge.

But they are some that report they can do days or even a week without charging (which I think is, some cases aload of BS. A few days yeah, but a week?)

Jailbreaking itself won't slow your Touch/Plod phone down but some apps can as they can run in the background - one of the daft rules placed on the AppStore. Apps such as Intelliscreen do run in the background and take up a small amount of processing time but no way can it hog or slow down the OS in the way you've mentioned.

Jailbreaking is well worth it. The apple appstore has nothing but junk and pointless utilities, with devs all battling to get their app into the top 10 for example. A lot of the quality stuff resides on the Jailbreak side of things, and also a lot of the buggier apps too. Stick to trusted jailbreak apps that forum peeps recommend and you should be fine.

So far my favourite find has been FiveIconDock - guess what that does? :)
