Hi fokes,

Going to the USA tomorrow so just phoned up O2 to make sure my phone will work abroad, woman said this wasn't an issue, great.

I then went on to ask about the wifi data, basically our villa has a USA based wifi connection that i have the WEP key for, even though this is a private paid for internet connection the woman told me if i connect to it and use the data i will get charged at £6 / MB....

Is this correct, i can't see how the can charge you to use a private wifi connection seen as i could connect a laptop upto it and not pay anything.

Any ideas fokes?

She doesn't know what she's talking about.

Turn off roaming data so that no data is sent/received over the cellular network. Then use Wifi as normal

Yea thats what i thought, i went through it three times with her, i said no i don't mean Hotspots or 3g etc i only mean my own private wifi!

That's complete rubbish - make sure you turn Data Roaming off in the settings, and every time you try and use data outside a WiFi network it pops up a message saying that Data Roaming is turned off and won't let you use it to stop you running up a bill. WiFi works perfectly.

Whatever you do, don't make too many calls or go over your text allowance abroad.

I had a £70 bill to pay when I came home from Turkey because of that :(

Crikey I'm very very nervous, or was, about using my phone abroad. Two weeks in Tenerife came to £240.

Though that was an old handset/contract. Like AdWright and the rest, turn off data roaming and just connect to the private network like it was here at home.

Do NOT try to use safari though when out and about, plus many of your apps will need a data source too so they wont work neither!

Cheers lads :)

I've come home to a £600 + Phone bill before so i don't want it to happen again mind saying that i've got no woman left at home to bother me this time!

No need to worry - even if you try, as long as data roaming is off you'll be fine. I'm on the Isle of Man at the moment and if you try and open Safari when not connected to WiFi it just shows this:
