iPhone 3GS 32GB (About Jailbreaking)

Ok im looking to jailbreak my iphone i got today, but i have a few questions:

What is tethered and untethered?

Pros & Cons of Jailbreaking?

If i jailbreak, then restore my phone will i the warranty be un-voided?

Is it possible to unblock my phone for free without paying £20 to vodafone, and also not voiding warranty?

Edit: Finally how do i go around doing this my phone is iPhone 3GS 32GB Black 4.2.1

There are two types of jailbreak:

  • Tethered: when the phone reboots or turns off, you lose the jailbreak and it has to be re-jailbroken
  • Untethered: the phone is always jailbroken and will only return to stock firmware when restored or updated

Advantages/disadvantages:

  • For: allows you to run code that Apple hasn't signed, and gives you a proper smartphone experience as opposed to the locked-down one that Apple wants you to have. I did mine mainly for the theming possibilities, and also the better notifications you can get with LockInfo.
  • Against: some software can be unstable, but it depends what you're using and how you have it set up. Does void the warranty, but you can just restore.

It is possible to unlock your phone yourself, but I'm not sure what tool.

To JB 4.2, use Greenpois0n: http://greenpois0n.com/ It's very easy.

Tethered vs. Untethered... the JB tool will clearly state which of the two it is. The greepois0n link above will do a nice untether for you :)

Jailbreaking doesn't change any of your data or apps on the phone, so the phone will be exactly the same as it was before, just with new functionality. If you want to restore back or update your software to official iOS, the phone will remain the same and you'll just lose the jailbreak's capabilities.

The main caveat with jailbreaking is that each specific version of iOS needs a specific jailbreaking tool. iOS 4.2 came out in November, but the untethered jailbreak was only released last month. It takes time for the hackers to find the exploits needed to modify the OS. iOS 4.3 is due out soon, which you may want to bear in mind.

When i jailbreak my iphone it will either disappear when turned on (tethered), or either stick when turned on (untethered), right?

One more question is my dad able to transfer his applications to my iPhone seeing how he has an iphone?

Kind regards.

Untethered is the best because it stays jailbroken when you turn the phone off and on again. That's the difference.

Tethered means it all dissapears when phone reboots.

In terms of appz, I'm not sure officially, but you can backup your Jailbroken Appz quite easily. For example, if you have Cydia installed with Installous (free app finder app) then in your installous download directory, you have a copy of all the apps. They are transferable through iphones that are jailbroken the same.

To do that, use something like iPhone explorer to connect and drag/drop the files from the:

Root Dir/User/Documents/Installous/Downloads folder.

You can copy the .IPA app files anywhere to any phone.

Ok thanks, is this normal?
Usage: 1Hr 12Min
Standby: 8Hr 8Min
Battery Left 58%?

Also my phone keeps trying to gain a signal because i only get max 2 bars and it disconnects a lot in the house, would this drain battery quick?
