iphone 3gs activation - different sim

Hello, my dad has an unwanted iphone 3gs upgrade that he has offered to me, do I need to use his sim card to activate it or am I able to use my O2 simplicity card to do this?

I activated my 2G iPhone recently after a full restore using a O2 Simplicity SIM, I doubt the 3GS is any different.
