Hi all,

I am looking to replace the battery in my sons 3GS as it has stopped charging. I see there are kits available ranging from £8 to £50

Would someone be able to let me know what I need exactly ?

many thanks

All you need is a #00 screwdriver and the battery, a strong suction cup is handy as well, but you can do the job without it, but it's easier than faffing around trying not to damage the gasket around the screen getting it out, the spudgers are largely useless unless you're massively cack handed.

+10 to me being "massively cack handed"

Well the spudgers (a plastic stick with a flat end essentially) are basically to undo cable clasps or pry off connectors, but I find they're more hassle than they're worth and prefer to use my fingers.

But yeah, all you need is the screwdriver and the battery, a suction cup makes getting the screen out a lot easier (you can just use some tape and a blunt end of a dinner knife to pry it out though, but you risk damaging the gasket if you muck it up too much), apart from that it's just screws to take out and connectors to unplug.

You might want to get a battery with a new adhesive backing on it as well, or buy one separately.

Ok, i followed the instructions. I bought a kit of off Flea Bay. Changed the battery, no issues, phone works perfectly except.........It wont charge.

Took everything apart again, back together, still wont charge.

Any ideas?

Are you certain the dock connector on the phone isn't damaged? From your 1st post I see that it wasn't charging the old battery either.

Check that there's nothing trapped inside it - shine a torch in there and blast with compressed air, or carefully use a brush to remove any debris.

If that doesn't work, sounds like you need a new dock connector (about £5 off the bay)

No, not damaged. the other batt was actually charging, just loosing power in about 2 mins. Will try dock connector. Thanks

Ah, I see. Well check the dock connector, and if that seems fine and you are certain you haven't damaged anything when stripping the phone then you could just have got sent a dodgy battery. Apparently it's pretty common

After 20-24 months, my 3GS battery also deteriorated rapidly and become unreliable for day to day activity (I tried various apps to extend the battery life and turning off push notifications, etc). Ultimately I decided to save £60-80 from ipaqrepair.co.uk and also replaced the battery myself. The link below details my 3GS battery replacement experience:
