Iphone 3GS keeps rebooting every 5 mins?

As title says, my GF's 3gs keeps rebooting every 5 mins when 'doing something'.
Leaving the phone on home page or making calls is fine, but all apps, ipod player etc causes the phone to reboot after 5 mins.

Also reboots 5 mins into 'syncing' with itunes.

Any ideas?

Have you tried restoring it back to factory settings?

Yeah done both types of reset. no good.

When you say both types of reset, do you mean a hard reset (holding the power and the home button) and restoring the iPhone through iTunes?

you need to put the phone into recovery then restore in Itunes. COMPLETE RESTORE.

Yeah, did both.
Its irrelevant now anyway, was doing a second full restore and smoke started coming from the battery compartment, and now its completely dead.

Out of warranty (as is always the case lol) so had to claim on insurance =/

Okay, didnt have to but, thats why we pay it, right?

I recon Apple would replace it out of warranty.
