Iphone 3gs unlock

Hi, quick question I'm buying my mother an Iphone 3gs but she's on the 3 network and it's locked to orange. It's being sold as her friend is now upgrading and has offered it to my mum for £20, I've sorted getting my mum a micro sim but am I correct in thinking that once you've paid your contract in full your network will provide you with an unlock code for a small fee?

The 3GS doesn't use a micro sim.

as for unlocking. your friends old network will unlock it for free without charge. so long as the contract has finished and paid in full

Orange didn't. I had to pay £20.

Can anyone help with a similar issue?

My mums been given a 3g by my cousin who now has a 4s. His contract expired and a new one been given. The network has been o2. Can it be unlocked to use of PAYG on Orange?

Dont mind paying for it to be done, if it would avoid anything slightly dodgy doing to it!

Same story, got a 3GS thats ended on a contract (Vodafone) and looking to get it unlocked as I wanna go on GiffGaff PAYG. Does Vodafone charge or can I get it unlocked free now? and once it's been unlocked is it like that forever? or does it change if say you Jailbreak it or update the iOS?

yeah phone up o2 (on o2 sim) and they should unlock it for free (check online on their website)
