The modem firmware on my device is 05.16.08 I think it's been updated and cannot be unlocked via jailbreak. However I heard it's downgradable and unlocked.

But I'm complete at loss with this.

couple questions:

1) I can get this unlocked pretty easily through the network for £15 so I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle? Should I just unlock it through the network - or is it generally easy to DIY unlock via jailbreak?

-I don't need to unlock it now, I'm with o2. But I'd rather future proof this in case I use a different network or want to sell it on an auction site or something.

2) Does the phone need to use official firmware before a network unlock can take place? reason I ask is I dont need to unlock it right now, but the phone is currently on official firmware - I'm going to jailbreak it as soon as ios6 untethered JB comes out.

-my concern is that I think the device needs to connect to itunes before it can be unlocked officially. If I JB it I might ruin my chance - also itunes may force me to update to latest version of iOS before upgrading which will leave me in a pickle.

I did an iPhone 4 recently, bought an O2 sim popped it in, used the live chat on O2s website gave them the security details of the account and the IMEI number and 72hrs later got a txt saying it was unlocked.

yours is on contract i assume, its free on contract but no pay as you go. i wish i got it unlocked while i was still on contract.
