Iphone 4/Synology forwarding?

Hi guys, downloaded an app which hooks up to my NAS and allows me to browse my photos. It works great within range of my wireless network obviously, but I want to use it out and about. I'm pretty sure it will work providing I tell it the correct IP address - and allow rights etc etc, but not sure on all the details.

This was my original thread on the Apple forum:

Any advice greatly appreciated.

What port is your photo station running on?

You'll need to forward requests to that port to your Synology's IP address in your router. It will be under port forwarding e.g. If ps is running on port 5050 forward all requests to your router on port 5050 to Synology IP address and port 5050.

Does that make sense?

Sort of! Default port I would imagine, let me look. I haven't changed anything in the config side of things yet.

Oh hang on - so I need to configure my router firstly, then the photo station?

Hmm not sure what I'm doing. The NAS wont let me configure the router - I have to use a pull down list to select the model I have (which isn't listed). It wont let me configure it as a result. I've got a Belkin N1 Vision. The Synology help file says that if I cannot configure the router via the control panel I can do it via the router's own config utility - so I guess I'll have to configure it from there.

You need to connect to your router's interface to enable port forwarding. Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

Search for the line marked Default Gateway - this IP address is for your router, put that into a browser and log in. I think port forwarding can be found under:

Setup -> Basic Settings -> Fixed CPE IP Assignment or Setup -> Advanced Settings -> Portforwarding?

but I could be wrong so you might need to check the manual.

Erm, I've found something called Firewall/Virtual servers that will allow me to : route external (Internet) calls for services such as a web server (port 80), FTP server (Port 21), or other applications through your Router to your internal network.

Is this what I need?

I've tried to follow that guide - it's not very helpful to me unfortunately. I think I have setup my port forwarding correctly on my router. If I go to canyouseeme.org and type in port 80 it tells me that my ISP is not blocking port 80.

I'm confused exactly what I need to do here - I can tell my app to point towards the internal IP address of the NAS and it works a treat but as soon as I am out of reach of my router it times out. How do I find the external address of the router? I can see the external gateway address, but that doesn't work in the app.

Am I over-complicating this? Is using the internal IP going to work outside as well?

Edit: Actually, I've just had a look at the router itself via the LCD and I noticed something called 'guest access' was disabled. So I've enabled this, added the WAN address to the app and bingo, I have access to my photos. I'm not convinced this is anything but temporary however.

You won't be able to access it using the internal IP when you're no longer connected to the local network. The router will forward traffic targetted at port 80 to the synology box.

Sounds like a security risk. :o

Which router are you using?

Well I guessed as much, but I cannot work out what the hell is going on here, it's a stupid little thing that is really frustrating!

Belkin Vision N1. It doesn't make it easy! I can't work out how to configure port forwarding using it.
