iphone 4s carrier problem

i recently purchased an iphone 4s 16GB and cut down the standard sim from my old phone to a micro sim. the phone, although recognising the sim and showing signal, doesn't send or receive texts and calls, and only the mobile internet works (wifi works too). does anyone know what would shop it from sending and receiving texts and calls, but still have the ability to use mobile internet (3G)?

not that i know of. also, i get a message saying that imessage is waiting for activation, as well as FaceTime. do these cause problems too??

the phone has no number on iTunes (ive just seen that...)
