Have an iphone 4S which has been updated to IOS 7.1.1 and now the wifi is grayed out in settings.

Any ideas on a fix?

Tried a restore, no good. Tried resetting all network settings, no good.

tried the hair dryer trick, no good.

It's out of warranty also.

It's dead Jim.

Common enough occurrence on the 4S, we've got a couple at work with the same thing.
Give the Apple store a go, but they'll most likely just not give a ****.

There's a chip that needs reballing, hairdryer trick should have got it working for a short while if you focused on the right area

Had the hair dryer blowing down the headphone jack and occasionally in the top left corner.

Cooled it down but still hasn't helped.

I'm assuming you're not within warranty, You've now go two options;

1. Claim against the original seller citing Consumer Law. Consumer Law covers you for any inherent manufacturing defects for up to 6 years from original purchase in the UK.
2. Speak to Apple who will replace the phone like-for-like for £160.

You may have better luck than me with the Consumer Law route - I'm now at the point where the original seller won't budge, my next step is to approach the Small Claims Court and hope they award in my favor, if they don't, I pay the costs and I'm no better off.

If I had £160 spare I'd just go to the Apple Store and get a replacement - the hassle I've had writing emails/letters I could have worked some overtime and paid for a replacement. Unfortunately, even Consumer Law is written that it can be contested.

Good Luck.
