Hi guys,

Is there any easy/free way of getting a couple of .mp3's I have onto my phone as a ringtone/message alert tone?

Cheers!

Anything in .m4a format (max 30 seconds for a ringtone, about 5 seconds for a text tone) will work once you've done the usual iTunes mojo. :)

Convert them to M4A then, go into folder options and deselect hide extensions for known file types. Then rename the extention M4R (R for ringtone) then you can just drag and drop in iTunes

> Just add any mp3 in iTunes
> Right click "Create AAC version"
> Right click "Show in explorer"
> Change the extension to .m4r
> Re-add to itunes.

It needs to be under 40 seconds :p

I use Audacity.

  1. Open any music file
  2. Trim to 40 second sample
  3. Export to AAC (M4a)
  4. Change extension to M4r
  5. Drag in to iTunes

Slightly off topic, I have been using Audacity to cut an MP3, exported it out as a 320kbps.
selected the option to create an AAC version, then renamed the extension to m4r.

It sounds very tinny on the iPhone compared to the original MP3. It seems the conversion has made it worse, Any ideas how I can improve the quality?

It shouldn't make it worse. AAC is superior than MP3, so any problems are down to the bitrate or you've accidentally applied a filter.

thanks for the reply, the MP3 on the PC sounds fine, how odd, the compression settings for AAC are standard?

I'll have a play.

Having issues getting a ringtone on my 4S. I used iringer, it's in the correct format and is in my folder for my device in ringtones. I sync it and go to ringtones on my phone and it's not there.

Same one I used to use on my 3G where it used to appear under custom.

Any ideas?
