iPhone 4S typing

I have an iPhone 4S for work and its my first iPhone. I have had it for ~10 month so far and it I have to say the keyboard is horrific for texting and emailing

1. The keyboard doesn't appear to have a full set of symbols.
2. I cant edit letters within a word.
3. Its difficult to move the cursor between words when tapping the screen.
4. No Swype type feature.

Can some of these issues be resolved without jailing breaking it?

1. When you press the 123 button it shows you other characters. If you want more, like brackets and dollar, press the #+= icon just above it.
2+3. Hold your finger on the word. you'll get a magnified image and you can move to the exact letter you want to.
4. Seem to be a couple of apps in the store for that.
