Has anyone here had an issue where they call someone, but can't hear anything through the earpiece? However when you look at the screen you can see that the call timer has started.

I have been having this issue intermittently, usually if you end the call and re-try it then works. I did some Googling and found this thread that describes the exact same issue, but with the 4S:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857?start=0&tstart=0

Later in the thread a work around (toggling the speaker button a few times) is identified to get the call to work without having to redial. I tired this and sure enough it works! So it is the same problem. Despite the length of that thread, no clear solution is found.

This is not a network issue because the call does connect, I just have to do the above to get the earpiece to work. I've made some test calls and during the time it is silent at my end the person who I am calling also can't hear me. It does not happen very often, just often enough to be annoying.

I took my phone back to the Apple store and they swapped it for another, but the same problem still persists, so I'm guessing it's unlikely to be a hardware fault? I've tried all I can, even restoring via iTunes.

Any ideas?
Thanks

I've had exactly the same issue, fix for me is to put speaker on then to go back to headset, so frustrating! There have been a few cellular fixes made with iOS 6.01 release, gonna try that update and see if it's any better. I seem to have the issue only when my wifi isn't connected, is that the same for you? May be a coincidence on my part!

Hi,

I think Wi-Fi has been off when I've had this issue, but I'm not a 100% sure, I'll keep an eye on this. I usually always turn Wi-Fi off before making calls. I updated to iOS 6.0.1 last night, but have had two of these silent calls today already.

I have raised this with Apple phone support, they put me through to a senior advisor who asked me to do a 'DFU restore' which he talked me through. Ultimately it did not fix the issue. He has now referred the case to an engineering team and I should have a response before Friday.

This is my second iPhone 5 (swapped at Apple store), so my initial thoughts were that it could not be a hardware fault, but I'm starting to wonder now.
