iphone 5 lightning connector

Are these weak in general?
Wife has had a 5 since last November, and the connector at the phone end is damaged, she hasn't abused it, the recharge only happens at two sites, the lead isn't moved around, it hasn't been wrapped around the phone or wrapped in any fashion.
I note reviews of apples replacements seem to be awful, and folks on the apple store claiming they break within weeks. Anyone else had this?

mine wasn't charging properly - it was full of pocket fluff that was so deep I couldn't see it. I scooped it out and it is fine now

Nope, several iPhone 5's in our household, none have broken despite a fair amount of abuse from our little boy!

All good here and my stepsons ipad mini is good too and he uses it a lot. Some cheap cable i got are a bit tempramental though.
