My phone only charges when I apply pressure to the lightning cable, the cable clips in fine but feels a little loose.

I've made extra sure there is no debris inside and tried various (Legit) cables.

Has anyone had this problem? Sadly the phone is out of warranty and I hear apple don't fix this kind of issue anyway. I know you can buy the individual parts online but I don't trust myself opening the phone.

It's doing my nut in.

If you don't trust yourself to fix it then take it to to a local phone repair shop, who will sort it for you.

Are you absolutely 100% sure there's no fluff in the port? Mine went the same way, and I couldn't see or feel anything but after a lot of fishing about with a plastic pick, out came a bit of pocket lint. Worked fine again after that.

Absolutely, I've had that problem before and fixed it myself.

I'll take it to a shop, that video makes it look easy but the comments below suggest otherwise. I really don't fancy attempting to fix it and accidentally destroying my phone, at least it works and holds some value as it is.

Apparently Apple will sell you a replacement for a discounted rate?

You have under EU law (European Directive 1999/44/EC says all EU countries have to ensure a retailer could be held liable for all "non-conformity" which manifest within two years from delivery) a minimum of two years warranty, if you purchased the phone from an apple store take it back and ask for it to be repaired or replaced, if you didn't get it from apple then you need to take it back to whoever you did get it from who is legally required to do the same.

Apple know this and have updated the info on the site some time back:

Warranty & Service
In the United Kingdom, consumers are entitled to a free of charge repair or replacement, by the seller, of goods which do not conform with the contract of sale. Under English law, consumers have up to six years from the date of delivery to exercise their rights. However, various factors may impact your eligibility to receive these remedies.

See: http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

See above, you have legal rights that should see it repaired for free by apple using genuine parts unless you have damaged it through misuse.

These laws only apply to faults or design flaws which existed when the product was manufactured, and it is up to the consumer to prove that this was the case.

Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a Genius who is willing to replace your device, but generally you'll meet resistance.

You mistake resistance with lack of awareness. Ask the genius to escalate it to the floor manager and things will usually go differently unless it's down to physical damage or misuse eg moisture sensor triggered/foreign object present etc. Of course if you didn't get it from apple you don't have a contract with them and you're banking on good will as apple are the warranty provider for apple and as such you'd need to take it to whoever sold you the phone.
