iphone 5 or 5s

My son has his iphone 4 now for 3 yrs and was going to buy an iphone 5 but cant decide whether to go for the 5 or the 5s, is there that much a difference between the two phones?

Even more so when work require an 8 digit passcode that has to meet requirements (not 12345678 etc)
