At 09:00 this morning I filled out the online reservation thing for an iPhone 5 for collection at an Apple Store.

When do they send out the emails? What are my chances of actually getting one reserved? I've not really looked into availability at all as I wasn't ready to buy until now.

Ahh good, I was expecting to see something during business hours although I suppose 21:00 is business hours for the shops!

Tomorrow is my first day back at work after just over two weeks off, that'll be interesting if I suddenly shoot off for a slightly extended lunch break as the Apple store is around 25 minutes to half hour drive away :)

I didn't realise it was a lottery. I thought it was a case of first come, first served. Only one store is close enough for me to get to and back at lunchtime so I've only tried the one reservation. It'll happen eventually.

If it's first come, first served then I can only speculate that they've not had any 64Gb white phones in stock as each day I've been there within microseconds of the clock ticking over at 09:00.

I went with the two nearest stores this morning, both were reserved by 09:00:30.

A friend of mine bought an iPhone 5 over the counter at Lakeside today with no reservation. They had the 16Gb black versions in stock.

Still no email though for a 64Gb white.

How many reservations did you make a day? :)
Two, one for Lakeside and one for Bluewater. Each day I had them in by 09:00:45 at the absolute latest, I was told by the dude in Lakeside that they're issued on a first come, first served basis but the problem was that they simply weren't getting the stock in anyway!

Firstly, "how in blue hell I find the money" is nothing to do with you.

Secondly, I'm not tied into any contract. Do the mathematics, it's cheaper to buy a phone outright and pay a miniscule cost every month than it is to be tied into a long contract with a high monthly fee but a low initial outcome. I'm not stupid, I know how much it costs me and trust me, it's cheaper this way.

Thirdly, you do sound disrespectful. How people spend their money is, as per my 'firstly', nothing to do with you.

I've now heard yet another story as to how the phones are allocated. I asked in the Bluewater store and was told that people who reserve a phone on a contract get them reserved on a first come, first served basis but those who reserve one SIM free get them allocated on a lottery basis.

It took me ten days to get one reserved, a significant time saving on ordering online and having to wait three to four weeks.

This is the first time I've not pre-ordered for delivery on launch day simply because I wasn't around at the time. Next time I go for a new one, I'll be sure to try and be available for an early pre-order.
